We do hope you enjoy following the Axbridge Heritage Trail as you meander through our lovely Town. With just over 40 properties, the trail covers only a fraction of the old and interesting buildings in the Axbridge. We have over 90 Grade II and II* listed buildings in Axbridge and our splendid Church to navigate to a property, use the drop-down selection below or Scan the QR code placed in the properties window.

We do hope you enjoy following the Axbridge Heritage Trail as you meander through our lovely Town. With just over 40 properties, the trail covers only a fraction of the old and interesting buildings in the Axbridge. We have over 90 Grade II and II* listed buildings in Axbridge and our splendid Church, just off the Town Square, is actually Grade I. It is hoped that in the near future the Church will have its own trail both round the building and church yard. There is always more to discover, such as the reservoir a short walk down the Cheddar Road, built in the 1930s with a capacity of 1350 million gallons, it takes its water from the River Yeo in Cheddar Gorge. It is now also used by walkers and cyclists, fishermen and a Yacht Club. Look up on the hill behind Axbridge and you will see a large 19th-c. building once ‘St Michaels free home for consumptives’ now a Cheshire Home. We continue to gather as much of the history of our Town as possible, if you have any paperwork, stories or pictures you would like to share???? Owners of the properties featured are proud of their home and love to share the history but please remember these are mostly private properties and respect the owners’ privacy.

Formed by a group of local people keen to share the history and beauty of Axbridge, the group started meeting remotely during lock down in 2021. We quickly decided we needed to limit the number of properties on the trail as we have some 90 listed buildings in the Town. Forty have been chosen for this initial trail noting a mix of history of the properties and the people who lived in them. A map of the trail running through Axbridge has been produced which can be seen above on this site or leaflets of the trail can be collected from the Museum, Church or Post Office. You will also find a Childrens Trail with a quiz, answer on the website and a link to the Axbridge Geocash trail. Axbridge is in the lee of the Mendips and looks out over the Somerset Levels. We hope you agree it is important that both residents and visitors find out about the smallest Town in Somerset, about the past history of its people and the buildings they lived and worked in, to encourage exercise and to bring people to this lovely part of Somerset. To help our friendly local businesses, above all to bring a smile back 😊 Whilst there are some 40 properties with plaques and QR codes you will also find details on the Strawberry line and Axbridge Pageant on the website. We couldn’t have done this trail without the lovely people who put it all together and of course all the groups and businesses that sponsored us and the grants we received from local charities. A big thank you to them all.
